Rothes A- 4 .Vs. 2 -Bishopmill Villa
Premier League Game 15 :: Rothes :: Sunday 30/08/09 :: 2 pm
Bishopmill Villa finally surrendered their unbeaten league run for 2009, with a very disappointing 4-2 defeat to struggling, yet improving Rothes A. The visitors started the game at blistering pace, Meego Stephen forcing a brilliant early save from Rothes keeper Dean Slessor. And on 15 minutes, the same Bishopmill player should have given his team the lead again, but his close range effort hit the crossbar and went over. Villa were piling pressure on the home goal, but Ali Burr's side weren't getting the rub of the green. And the way football goes, the inevitable happened on 31 minutes, with Rothes taking the lead. A thunderbolt from Ricky Thomson went right over Villa keeper Ricca Collie's head and into the net for 1-0 to the Speysiders.
But as at all times this season, Burr's men rolled their sleeves back up and fought back to 1-1, 7 minutes later. Alex McGregor switched the ball from the left wing, over to Gary Burr on the right who crossed for brother Paul to nod home the equaliser. And on 43 minutes, the visitors justly took the lead. Paul Burr's free kick found Kelly Sim, who slotted home his first goal of the season.
Half time score was 2-1 to Bishopmill.
The Rothes management obviously told their players that more effort was required and reminded them of their battle to stay in the Premier Division, because it was a completely re-juvinated team that came out for the 2nd half! Ricca Collie was called into early action, but it wasn't until with 20 minutes remaining, the game completely changed direction.
On 71 minutes the scores were tied again, Graham Logan capitalizing on poor marking by Villa after a dubious free kick was taken by Thomson, and Logan was at the back post to head in for 2-2. Villa were making things hard for themselves with some suicidal passes puting them in danger and eventually, the game was back in favour of the home side. Richard Rizza firing home for 3-2 with only 10 minutes remaining.
You would have thought Rothes would have sat back and held on, but they knew that if they did that, Villa would be piling pressure on the home goal, so instead they went on the attack for a clinching goal, and that tactic worked with just 2 mins to go. A good flowing move, set newly on sun Lee Donald to run on with the ball at feet, before cooly slotting under Collie to clinch the three points for the strugglers.
A bad defeat for Burr and his team, but with Aberlour and Portgordon drawing on the same day, the League is not just out of the Elgin side's grasp just yet.
