Burghead United- 3 .Vs. 3 -Bishopmill Villa {Villa win 5-4 on Pens}
Planwell Cup Semi Final :: Burghead :: Sunday 13/09/09 :: 2 pm
Bishopmill Villa confirmed their place in yet another cup final this season, meaning that Ali Burr's side will have contested every competition going in Moray Welfare football this year! A magnificent record by any standard, the Elgin side still made it hard for themselves in this evenly contested semi final.
The game started quite evenly with a prominent midfield battle taking place, as is usually the case between this two sides. It didn't even take half an hour for the opening goal to arrive though, and it was the visitors who grabbed it. Former Brocher, Ritchie Bremner's excellent corner found its way through to Meego Stephen who knocked home the opener on 26 mins. Daniel Terry came close a couple of times for Burghead, but Villa keeper Ricca Collie was barely tested.
It got worse for the home side on 41 minutes, as Paul Burr did well down the right wing, before crossing for brother Gary, who's shot was saved, but the rebound was slotted home by Alex McGregor for 2-0 to Bishopmill. And just 2 minutes later, the game looked dead and buried as McGregor won the ball off of Sean Costen, before smacking a 20 yarder which was helped into the net by United goalkeeper Ryan Gordon, to make it 3-0 to the Elgin men!
Half time score was 3-0 to Villa.
Burghead came out of the traps as expected in the 2nd half, and just 3 minutes in, they reduced the deficit to just 2 goals, a bullet of a header from Sam Fairgrieve from a corner made the scoreline 3-1. Villa were becoming 2nd best in this contest from here, and before the hour mark, Burghead had given themselves a massive chance of rescuing this semi final. Yet another header from Fairgrieve, this time following a free kick meant there was only one goal in it.
And the inevitable happened with 15 minutes to go, Villa throwing away a 3 goal lead once again this season, as an absolute screamer from Bryan Attridge flew past Collie into the top corner of the net. Both sides tried to get the winning goal, but in the end, I think both were happy with a penalty shoot out.
The penalties were very well taken, with Attridge scoring first for Burgead. Kev Taylor then squared things up, before Steven Young blasted home United's 2nd. Gary Burr smacked home Villa's 2nd, before Daniel Terry and Sean Costen scored both of Burghead's next 2. Scott Innes and Stewart McGettrik also converted their kicks for Bishopmill to make the scoreline 4-4, with one kick left each. Michael Fraser stepped up for Burghead, but his kick was saved by Ricca Collie which meant Alex McGregor had the chance to make up for his horrible spot kick in the Mike Simpson Cup Final. The striker steadied himself before firing home via the post to send Bishopmill Villa to their 3rd cup final this season!
