Bishopmill Villa- 3 .Vs. 3 -Burghead United

Premier League Game 14 :: Pinefield :: Sunday 23/08/09 :: 11 am

B
ishopmill Villa were attempting to overcome cup final heartache of just 48 hours previous as they took on Burghead United in a crucial League encounter at Pinefield. The Elgin men played 120 mins plus a penalty shoot out on the friday night as Aberlour Villa won the first silverwear of the season from the hands of Ali Burr's side. The Villa got off to a bright start in this one though, as a Paul Burr corner from the left was met in the air by Stewart McGettrik, who's header gave the Elgin men the lead after just 4 mins

But the lead wasn't to last, and on 16 minutes a cross from Aron Mone was headed into the net by the unmarked Danny Terry, who quite possibly was the smallest player on the field! Things got worse for Bishopmill on 25 mins, when astonishingly yet another Terry header,this time from a corner made the scoreline 2-1 to the Broch. The cup final hangover was visibly hitting the home side, and United gave themselves a 2 goal advantage 10 mins before the break, when an Andrew Young cross found the head of Sam Fairgrieve who made it 3-1 to Burghead.

Bishopmill finally got back into their stride, and right on the interval, Tony Fraser ran with the ball down the right wing before crossing in for Stewart McGettrik to grab his 2nd goal of the game.

Half time scoreline was 3-2 to Burghead.

In the 2nd half, there was a lot of controversy and talking points, an ever present in games between these two teams. The first of these, was just after the hour mark, when Craig Grant looked to have handled the ball in the box, but the referee played on much to the anger of the Burghead management, players and supporters. To rub salt in the United wounds, Grant went on a run 3 mins later, before lobbing Broch keeper Ryan Gordon with a cross-cum shot to square the scoreline at 3-3.

The next talking point was towards the end of the match, when Alex McGregor was halfed inside the Burghead box, but the referee looked to be evening things up by not awarding the home side what looked a stone-wall spot kick.

Villa had the chance to complete the comeback right at the death, but substitute Marc Williams fired his one-on-one shot right at the legs of onrushing Burghead keeper Gordon.

A bad loss of points this for Ali Burr and his Bishopmill side, who now trail Portgordon by 2 points at the top of the Premier Division.
